Testimonials

"Sheena is not just a multi-talent, but a multi-tasker who became a most valuable assistant director, back-up director and sounding board during a challenging musical fundraiser. From the most mundane set-up tasks to having her step in and replace me during a three-week trip, Sheena showed herself to be trustworthy, reliable, creative and a ground-standing leader. Now if she could only teach me to sing like her..."

“Sheena is an incredible multi-faceted instructor and coach. During her lessons, she becomes your constructive critic and your most enthusiastic cheerleader, and matches your pace of work perfectly. All the time I’ve spent in lessons has taught me one thing - to do my work, and to do it right. I have always struggled with motivation and have had problems with going into lessons “blind,” or without preparation. I now know not to waste my time in lessons, because just twenty minutes with Sheena can lead to a new discovery about your performative abilities that stays with you forever.
Sheena helped me discover what it means to truly work towards a goal and achieve it, but beyond that, she has taught me how valuable the work itself is. Pardon this cliché: the journey is more valuable than the goal. Performing a song well takes work, and the hours you put in are never wasted.
Thank you, Sheena, for your inspiring energy and care. Everyone should have the privilege of working with you.”

"What’s great with Sheena is that you’re never afraid of sounding really bad or of looking like a fool – which I probably did most of the time! She has a way to tune in to whatever vibe you bring to the lessons and really tailors her classes to the specific needs you have, adapting or changing vocal exercises to better the areas you need to work on. She made me bring my guitar and sing whatever song I felt like working on, which is exactly the way I wanted to learn.
After a few months of regular lessons, I started to feel more confident when I had to sing. I would definitely encourage anyone to try her as a vocal coach as even a few lessons would be beneficial if you wish to develop your vocal ability or simply just to have fun."

"I'm a musician, a writer, arranger and producer. Least of all a singer. So when I decided to take on the task of being the "lead singer" of my very own rock band, I was lost. I'd sung back ups, I'd sung harmonies. But being the "front man" is more than just singing in tune and looking good. You have to MEAN IT, you have to sell every word, every syllable that comes out of your mouth.
And that's where Sheena came in. Not only did she teach me the techniques that all singers must know, she helped me connect between the words and the context, allowing me bring life to the words and melodies I had written. We worked hard, and she was very patient with me, and lo and behold, the results became truly evident!
Some people are born with a "Golden Voice", and others, like me, need training to unlearn bad habits, and create new, positive ones, like proper breath control, vowel placement, locating resonators. The body is the ultimate musical instrument, and it's a joy to finally know how to play it properly! Thanks, Sheena!"

"As a musician, I have always had difficulties singing. Quite frankly, with years of composing music it has been quite embarrassing. I have tried different music teachers in the past and to no avail were they able to keep it interesting without being discouraged. After numerous fails and almost giving up I had decided to try it one last time and began working with Sheena in the summer of 2012. With Sheena, I have been able to work with her consistently for over a year as she keeps lessons engaging and interesting.
Not only has Sheena the technical know-how to teach, but is also patient, straightforward, friendly, focused, open-minded, and tries to find different methods to help you understand what you’re learning. I have learned the importance of proper technique, but also how it helps to accomplish the message you want to invoke when singing. I now understand that the creative elements are just as important as technique. There are even production techniques I use in my instrumental music such as using greater dynamics. Now, I am far more comfortable singing in front of individuals, I am able to create dynamics within a song, I am able to listen to the notes I am singing, and I am able to sing a note effortlessly. Thanks Sheena."

"I highly recommend Sheena as a singing instructor and coach. I took lessons with her for two years, and she always impressed me as very knowledgeable and observant as an instructor. I was by no means a good singer when I took my first lesson with her, nor was I particularly good after my last lesson. But I was better, and I felt more confident and hopeful about my singing, and I certainly enjoyed myself more when I did sing. Sheena was patient with me when I fumbled through things that were difficult, she consistently encouraged me to push my limits. Most of all for me, though, Sheena was fun, so I always looked forward to going to my lessons and I always left having had some good laughs and feeling that I had just spent an hour in a wonderful way."

"While in Montreal, I’d been looking for a voice coach for a while who understood both classical and pop vocal styles. I was referred to Sheena Bernett and am really glad for that! Sheena really helped blend my lower and higher register and also helped improve my pitch. She was really great to work with, I felt very comfortable the whole time and in good hands. I moved to Vancouver to record an EP but really hope to work with her again sometime in the future!"

"I started taking lessons with Sheena as I felt that I was not using my voice to its full potential. She helped me improve my breathing, control and extend my range. We did many fun exercises and Sheena was excellent at finding what my weak points were and working with me to conquer them. We recorded our classes so I could continue practicing at home which helped me advance quickly. I loved going to her lessons and always looked forward to them."
